Riken Yamamoto is Director and Professor of Architecture at the Yokohoma Graduate School of Architecture, Yokohoma National University. He founded his own firm, Riken Yamamoto & Field Shop, in 1973, after graduating from Nihon University and obtaining his Master in Architecture degree from Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, where he studied under Hiroshi Hara. As one of the most prominent architects of contemporary Japan, Yamomoto’s unconventional residential works of the 1970s and 1980s, as well as his more recent large-scale commissions in Korea, China, Japan, and Switzerland, have earned him numerous awards, including a Kanagawa Architecture Award (2007), two Architectural Institute of Japan Design Awards (1987, 2002), two Good Design Awards (1999, 2005) and the Japan Art Academy Award (1991).
