History, Theory & Criticism

03/11/2011

Yesterday Visiting Professor Philip Ursprung began his seminar on Specialized Theory titled Images: Architecture and the ‘Iconic Turn’.  The Specialized Theory seminars form part of the History, Theory & Criticism department and are open to only 10 students who selected the course through a lottery process. Ursprung’s seminar will discuss the trend towards visual images while exploring their critical role in contemporary culture. As described by Ursprung, ‘the notion of the image as a dynamic tool that does something rather than as a passive representation is helpful for the current discussion of architecture’, and the seminar will attempt to develop the potential of that idea.

The second edition of the BIArch Journal includes an article written by Ursprung, providing a more detailed description of the concepts behind the seminar he’ll be leading as a part of this year’s MBIArch Program.

Philip Ursprung is Professor of the History of Art and Architecture at the ETH Zürich’s Department of Architecture (D-Arch). He has also taught at Hochschule der Künste Berlin, the University of Zurich, and Columbia University’s GSAPP. He is the editor of Herzog & de Meuron: Natural History (Montreal, CCA 2002), Caruso St John: Almost Everything (Barcelona, 2008), and Studio Olafur Eliasson: An Encyclopedia (Cologne, 2008), and co-author of Images: A Picture Book of Architecture (Munich 2004).
