MBIArch Notes: Ecopark Visit

MBIArch Notes

As part of the Energy Technologies course, which has expanded on themes relating to the integration and maximization of optimized energy solutions within design processes, MBIArch students recently enjoyed a one-day excursion to the Waste Recycling Plant and Ecopark (designed by Iñaki Ábalos & Juan Herreros in 2003) located in Barcelona’s Forum area.

Students toured the recycling and waste incineration plant buildings (including zero-Carbon-emission facilities for storing, selecting and processing waste as well as those dedicated to storing the resulting energy) and were acquainted with the basics of waste recycling and production of biomass energy. The visit offered a glimpse to the practical possibilities of different strategies for energy implementation in the built environment at various scales.

The second part of the excursion focused on the theme of geothermal energy in urban contexts. Students visited the Districlima facilities the Forum, which produce electrical power for buildings located in @22 district in Barcelona. This gave them the opportunity to witness the performance of centralized systems and understand the way urban infrastructures can help decrease the environmental impact of architecture.
