As a part of the Sustainable Building Services course, led by Juan Gallostra–engineer and General Director of Grupo JG, Barcelona–which addresses the limitations and possibilities of building services design through the interaction of mechanical and electrical systems in relation to other building elements (structure, circulation, envelope), MBIArch students followed a guest lecture held by Mark Chown, Director of the Spanish office of Arup, a global engineering and design consulting firm that employs over 10.000 professionals worldwide.

Mark Chown, Director of Arup Spain
The aim of the lecture was to reflect on the application of the theoretical principles reviewed throught the course by focusing on Arup’s practical experience and to reflect on the company’s particular approaches and tools to sustainable building services. Among the topics discussed were carbon-neutral building, self-sustaining water cycles, reliance on local resources, as well as the logistics of the construction site and waste management control. Presenting highlights of Arup’s work, Chown emphasized on the importance of learning to cope with future climate change, while positively contributing to society and to the environment throughout all stages of the design process.
